Unit One: Reflection
How did the studio lessons relate to the given Big Idea?- How might you utilize visual art integration utilizing the studio lessons in your own classroom?
Each studio that we did during this unit was directly coordinated with Identity. Henry Massi was the inspiration for our first studio was a collage of things that we identified with, or things that make us, us. I included things such as the place I work, my favorite animal, things I like to do. It is small representation of me and my identity. Our second studio that we did was inspired by Chuck Close. We chose a Disney character that we identified with and a partner that they had too. My pick was the Mad Hatter because he is a spontaneous person that lives every day like it is his last. I also included the Cheshire Cat because I feel as if he works together with the Mad Hatter to create this strange world that they live in with no worries. I also created the background to look like they are falling down the Rabbit Hole, which I feel is a common feeling for students in college. Another personal part I added to this studio piece was the quote. It is one of my favorites and I think it represents my identity well. Our third studio which was our last one in identity, was inspired by William Wegman. We chose a character from a fairytale or fable and combined them with an animal of their similar personality. I immediately thought of the Swan Princess because her character is so much like the animal. It was interesting creating the piece because I have the Princess mid-transformation into the swan. In a classroom, it could also be very fun for a student to take a picture of themself and attach an animal to them that they relate with. Eisner states that "The arts celebrate multiple perspectives. One of their large lessons is that there are many ways to see and interpret the world." I feel as if this quote exemplifies exactly what we were trying to get through this unit. Art can show whatever you want it to and it can be interpreted a million different ways. Every lesson taught to children can be integrated with an art lesson.
