Unit Two: Reflection
The first studio we had for out relationship unit was printmaking. My sister and I have always had a very close relationship, but we became even close when our father passed away four years ago. I chose to take a picture of the two of us with the quote, "A sister is both your mirror and your opposite." I love this quote and I think it perfectly describes us. Pink (2005) states, "Empathy is the ability to imagine yourself in someone else's position and to intuit what that person is feeling."(p,159). My sister and I are able to do this for one another and I think that is what makes our relationship so strong. We will be there for each other through thick and think. Our relationship is one you would call unbreakable.
The next studio we did was very different and very cool. It was sort of like a community studio. We each had an index card with our original picture on it and we would pass them and add a photo or someone else's index card. It was fun seeing what everyone would decide to put on certain cards for certain people! I loved how they turned out! This is something I would love to do with my future class and I think students would really enjoy it. However, these don't represent my life at all. The only thing you could say is that they turned out weird and so am I. According to Pink (2005), “The book you hold in your hands. The clothes that cover your body. The piece of furniture on which you’re sitting. The building that surrounds you. These things are part of your life because someone else imagined them and brought them into being” (pg. 70). This quote perfectly describes how we are all related and we will all impact one another in some way.
The last studio we did depicted our homes. I fully believe in the fact that home can be where ever your loved ones are. I have a home in Columbia with my friends, a home in St. Louis with my mom and sister, and homes all over the country with family and friends. That is why I created a house that is not specific to my own. I also added the quote, "home is where the heart is." I fully believe this is true. Where ever I am with the people I love, I am home.
